Scolari Plays Down Greek Drama

March 26, 2008

Scolari

Portugal were beaten 2-1 by Greece in a match wherein the former wanted to avenge themselves for the defeats during the Euro 2004 in their own country.

Without several of their most important figures, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani or Deco, Portugal were unable to control the game and create chances, and suffered two goals from free-kick situations.

Nuno Gomes’ late strike was not enough to bring his team back into the game, and all that Greece needed to do to leave Germany with the win was to retain their advantage until the final whistle, which is exactly what they did.

After the game, Scolari said: “This result was normal, this was a game to test things and to observe how things went.

“We will try to change a lot of things during the 20 training days we will have before the Euro tournament.”

Questioned about the importance of Ronaldo’s absence on the outcome of this game, the Brazilian tactician explained: “We missed Ronaldo because he is a great player.

“But concerning what we wanted from this game, it was interesting because we were able to test other solutions.

“We will have the team that we have always had when the official tournament starts.”
